Best and cheapest ways to ship heavy and large items:

While the carriers/shippers who cater to smaller businesses and individual customers post their prices publicly (USPS, UPS, FedEx), carriers that work with larger businesses on a larger scale tend not to post their prices publicly (FedEx Freight, DHL).

If your product is big enough and high-quantity enough, it will almost always be cheaper to use freight shipping than a parcel, so it’s always worth it to get the price for freight shipments.

The prices you personally inquired about from these freight companies are actually very different from the prices we provide you with because we are freight forwarders. That’s why your goods were handed over to us, and although they were ultimately delivered by UPS/DHL/FEDEX and other shipping companies, the quotation we gave you would be very low.

4 tips for shipping large and heavy items

Before you ship large and heavy items, you first need to ensure they’re secured and packed in the right packaging.

Once that’s done, there are a few more things you need to consider before you send out the package.

1. Use heavy-duty packaging

First, you will need to plan ahead and provide your item(s) with the packaging it deserves.

For heavy items, try not to use used packaging that is more susceptible to breaking. Also, consider boxes that are stapled, not glued, at the seams. This can go a long way in preserving your packages on their way through the supply chain.

2. Choose a carrier

Next, you need to pick a carrier to ship your large and heavy items. Choosing the right one is essential, as they play a massive role in customer satisfaction.

Even though potential problems in the shipping process may not be your fault, your customers will associate an awful shipping experience with your brand, so you need to pick the carrier you’ll use carefully.

You need to ensure that the carrier you want to use can ship larger and heavier packages — not all of them do. You should also consider your budget, timing, and the carrier’s shipping processes.

3. Get insurance

Lost or damaged items is a worst-case scenario, but it is one you will inevitably have to deal with. So, how can you mitigate the risk, as well as lower what you’ll have to pay for the replacement product and shipping?

Shipping insurance. It’s not that expensive when compared to the benefits, and it’s well worth it if you’re shipping a high volume of products.

There’s a lot that goes into deciding who to ship your heavy items with, and how. Size matters just as much as weight — you could have two packages that weigh the same, but one is small and dense and the other is large and awkwardly shaped, and you’ll likely have two different shipping companies come up as the best result.

4. Split up your shipments

Especially for larger and heavier shipments, sometimes. it makes sense to split shipments.

Of course, it’s always best to ship in bulk, but when the shipment gets too large, it could end up costing you more in both labor and costs.

Splitting a shipment might also be your only option. For example, if you’re shipping a pallet via DHL freight and it weighs more than the weight limit of 1000kg (~2,200 lbs), then you’ll have to split the pallet into two shipments.

Door To Door Shipping Large And Heavy Items

Ship large and heavy items,Whether you want to send a box full of books, a pallet of bricks or a whole fleet of vehicles, you can count on us to do the heavy lifting.

What’s considered heavy?

Any parcel weighing over 23 kg is classified as a heavy shipment by the official regulators. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will need to go on a pallet. Shipments under 70 kg can usually travel without one, although this varies depending on the region.

What’s considered large?

While there is no official classification for large goods, anything that needs to go on a pallet is usually placed in this category.
Large shipments may incur an Exceed Dimensions fee depending on the service you choose. For Economy or Domestic services, this applies to shipments larger than 2.4 x 1.2 x 1.8 m. For Express Services, it’s 1.2 x 1.2 x 1.5 m.

What’s considered oversized?

Any single item heavier than 500 kg or too large to be palletised will require a unique solution designed by our team of specialists. E.g. Tail-lifted goods, industrial equipment.

Anything and everything

The Right Way To Ship Heavy Items From China For Your Business

Pack large or heavy

Heavy boxes

We can accept boxes weighing up to 70 kg without a pallet, but it’s vital that everyone involved in the shipping process is aware that it’s a heavy shipment. Labelling boxes over 23 kg with a ‘HEAVY’ label will help ensure the safety of those handling them.

Pallets

The perfect pallet doesn’t just provide stability and protection – it also helps avoid additional costs. As our charges are based on a combination of weight and volume, anything that takes extra space or makes your pallet non-stackable could incur surcharges.

Oversized

If you’re shipping something irregularly sized or in excess of 500 kg, you may need some help packing and sending it on its way. Please contact Customer Service so we can help you with your next step.

The good news is, you don’t need to know the dimensional weight of your package or do any complicated calculations, our shipping calculator will do it for you. You provide the size, weight and destination and we provide you with instant quotes from a range of couriers. Neat hey?!

When it comes to finding the cheapest way to ship large packages, there are a few things you can do to reduce the price. Firstly, don’t leave it until the last minute. As mentioned in point 3, the delivery time will impact the price, so if you can avoid express delivery times and choose a slower service, like ground delivery, you’ll pay less. Ground and economy shipping services for US domestic deliveries generally take 2-5 business days

Secondly, make sure your shipping box isn’t excessively large compared to the item you’re sending. The size and weight of your package should include all packaging materials so you can keep costs lower by ensuring you don’t use a bigger box than you need.

Finally, use Parcel Monkey to compare prices across different couriers. Not only will this save you time (no one wants to spend an afternoon getting shipping quotes), you’ll also benefit from our discounted rates which are particularly low when it comes to shipping large boxes and heavy packages.

However, before you can work out a price you’ll need to package your item, which brings us nicely to the second pain point of shipping bulky and heavy items – packaging. The correct packaging is important for any shipment, but even more so when you’re sending something large or heavy.

How do you pack heavy items for shipping?

Whether you’re shipping across states or across the world, you need to make sure your item is packaged correctly.

Here are our top five packing tips for large and heavy items:

Choose a box that’s strong enough for the item you’re shipping: If you’re sending something that weighs 70lbs or more you’ll need a corrugated cardboard box, preferably a double-walled box. This should safely carry up to 150 lbs.

Fill any gaps: Heavier items are more likely to move around in the box during transit so make sure your box isn’t too big (not too small either) and fill any gaps. Packing peanuts, air pillows and kraft paper can be used for smaller items, but with really heavy or large items it’s better to fill any gaps with cardboard or foam board. These materials won’t crush so easily and will reinforce the rigidity of the box.

Individually wrap fragile items: If you’re sending a large box that contains a number of fragile items, each one should be wrapped individually with extra padding for any corners or parts that could easily be damaged. For smaller items, you may want to consider double boxing.

Use strong packing tape (not masking tape or sellotape) and use 3 strips to seal the box. It’s also a good idea to reinforce the corners of the box with packing tape.

Attach a heavy sticker: If you’re shipping with UPS, you must attach a heavy package sticker to all packages that weigh more than 70 lbs (31.5 kgs). You can buy a heavy sticker online from the UPS supplies store.

Courier pickup for large items
Once you’ve packaged your item and you’ve got your shipping quotes it’s time to choose a courier service.

Price will play a large part in your decision, but there are other things to consider. For example, if you’re sending something that’s 50lbs or more you might not want to carry it to the post office. The same goes for very large packages.

That’s why the easiest way to ship a heavy item or a large package is to book a courier to collect it from you. When you get a quote through our you’ll have a choice of drop off and courier pickup services, so why not save yourself some hassle and have your package or box collected from your home or work address.

Both FedEx and UPS offer courier pickup services for large packages and usually the extra cost is minimal.

So, to summarize, here are our top tips on how to ship large items.
